Bradley Stoke Community School's record breaking results are down to 'strict discipline'

A head teacher has suggested his school's "strict" discipline helps to explain pupils' record-breaking GCSE performances.

Bradley Stoke Community School, South Gloucestershire, is celebrating today (August 22) after 16 per cent of pupils earned a grade 9, the highest grade possible.

Head teacher Steve Moir described himself as "incredibly proud" of pupils' hard work and achievements, before highlighting one of the ingredients to the school's success.

He said: "We are known for being strict and prescriptive in the routines we expect students to follow, because this frees up students’ attention for the really important thing that happens in lessons - learning."

In English and maths, a total of 82 per cent of pupils earned a grade 4 or above, while English alone saw 93 per cent reach that threshold.

The maths and science departments have also thrived again, with 84 per cent of pupils gaining a grade 4 or better in maths and 87 per cent recording that achievement in science.

Mr Moir said: "There are so many success stories, not just from the individuals in the spotlight for achieving the top grades, but for every young person who has surpassed their own personal targets and made remarkable progress."

Mr Moir went on to praise his "amazing" teachers and supportive parents.

He added: "We focus on building effective relationships in school (and of course there is space for fun and a shared dialogue between teacher and student), but essentially we are here to learn in an environment where each individual is encouraged to achieve their potential.”

A total of three pupils at the school gained eight grade 9s among their results. They are Lydia Tang, Jamie Summers and Harleen Gulati.

A total of 12 others passed at least one subject with the highest grade.
