Bradley plane crash: 'Multiple injuries' after World War 2 bomber hits airport building

A B-17 plane has crashed at Bradley International Airport in Connecticut.

It is not known how many people were on board the World War 2-era plane.

Multiple injuries are being reported and the plane is thought to have hit a shed as it came into land.

The airport has been closed.

Pictures from the scene show a flaming wreckage with black smoke billowing into the sky.

The crash is thought to have happened at roughly 10am local time.

At least four victims of the crash were taken to Hartford Hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The Federal Aviation Administration said a vintage B17 aircraft crashed at the end of Runway 6 while attempting to land.

The plane is a civilian registered aircraft and is not flown by the military, the FAA added.

The airport wrote on Twitter: "We can confirm that there was an accident involving a Collings Foundation World War II aircraft this morning at Bradley Airport.

"We have an active fire and rescue operation underway.

"The airport is closed. We will issue further updates as information becomes available."

Connecticut State Police are investigating.

The national Wings of Freedom tour was making a stop at the airport this week.

The tour, run by The Collings Foundation, involves several aircraft from the World War 2 era including a B-17 Flying Fortress, a B-24 Liberator, a B-25 Mitchell, a P-51 Mustang and a P-40 Warhawk.

The International Association of Fire Fighters Local S15, the union representing nearby first responders, tweeted a picture of black smoke hovering over the airport with the message: "Our crews are operating at an aircraft crash at Bradley airport."

The 'shed' the plane hit is the airport's de-icing building, according to US reports.
