Bradley Cooper’s turn in American Sniper led to the belief among some that his political views are of the same persuasion of the Navy SEAL he portrayed in Clint Eastwood’s blockbuster.
But, as those closely observing events at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia found out, that belief appears to be wrong. And some Republicans are not happy.
The camera switched to its star-studded audience who have largely come out in force behind Hillary Clinton as she goes head-to-head with Donald Trump, and spotted Cooper, who was sat with his girlfriend, the Sports Illustrated model Irina Shayk.
His starring turn as Chris Kyle clearly made an impact on Republican voters. Some were perturbed to discover Cooper’s political affiliations lay with the Democratic party despite his long-term support for Clinton. Others were simply amused by their outrage.
Cooper, who donated to Clinton’s senate campaign in 2000, responded to criticism over his decision to play the role of the late Kyle in January, telling The Daily Beast: “My hope is that if someone is having a political conversation about whether we should or should not have been in Iraq, whether the war is worth fighting, whether we won, whether we didn’t, why are we still there, all those (issues), that really—I hope - is not one that they would use this movie as a tool for.”
