Bradford City enlist military experience for help ahead of huge Bristol Rovers game

Gary Bowyer has enlisted the help of a motivational speaker ahead of Saturday's game against Bristol Rovers.

Chris Robinson, who served with the Yorkshire Regiment for 23 years, was invited into training to address the players during the week ahead of a huge game against the Gas on Saturday.

Bradford currently sit bottom of League One, eight points off safety, so a loss on Saturday will leave them one game away from relegation.

Bowyer knows only five wins out of five will do for his side, and called in Robinson to help boost his squad ahead of the game.

'The job is not done yet' warns Bristol Rovers manager Graham Coughlan

He told the Telegraph and Argus: “He was in the military for 23 years and just spoke about his time and what it was about being part of a team.

“He spoke about resilience and looking out for each other. It’s about being selfless for the good of the team.

“I think it’s important that players get a perspective on life outside of football as well. I felt it was good.

“We’ve just got to concentrate on improving the performances, which we have done over the last couple of weeks. We’re seeing signs of the work that we do with them coming out in the actual games.

“It’s quite good as the manager and coach because you are able to identify certain areas and then work on them.”

Bowyer says Bradford have to take it one game at a time, but know the huge task they face to try and climb to safety.

He said: “It’s about personal sacrifices now. We’ve got to do everything we possibly can.

“The first focus is obviously Saturday and then we’ll go game-by-game – but we’ve got to win all five. It’s a simple equation.

“That’s it now. Beforehand, there was all this uncertainty of how many points you need.

“The equation is clear now. We must win five out of five, for sure.”

Bristol Rovers' 2019 end of season award winners in their own words

He added: “Forget the points now. We can’t worry about anyone else – not that we did in the first place.

“It’s such a simple equation. You’ve just got to go and win the game.

“If we do that, then we’ll go and focus straight on to the Coventry one. It’s the same equation.

“There’s clarity and the players know exactly what they have to do.

“We’ve shown them one or two motivational bits that might inspire them and we’ll go from there.”
