Brad Pitt thanks Bradley Cooper for helping him get sober: 'Every day has been happier ever since'

Brad Pitt has expressed his gratitude towards Bradley Cooper for helping him get sober while accepting an award for his role in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

On Wednesday evening, Pitt received the Best Supporting Actor accolade at the National Board of Review Annual Awards Gala for his performance in the Quentin Tarantino-directed film.

The award was presented to the actor at the awards ceremony in New York City by Silver Linings Playbook star Cooper.

As Pitt took to the stage, he embraced Cooper before revealing that his friend “rushed over here to do this” after putting his daughter, two-year-old Lea De Seine Shayk Cooper, to bed.

“He’s a sweetheart. I got sober because of this guy and every day has been happier since. I love you, and thank you,” Pitt told the audience.

In September 2019, the Ad Astra star opened up about giving up drinking after his split from Angelina Jolie.

Pitt told The New York Times that he made the decision to remove his “drinking privileges”, opting to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings for a year and a half following their separation.

“You had all these men sitting around being open and honest in a way I have never heard,” the 56-year-old said.

“It was this safe space where there was little judgment, and therefore little judgment of yourself.”

Pitt recently won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture for his performance in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

He beat fellow nominees Tom Hanks, Anthony Hopkins, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci, and is nominated for an accolade at the upcoming Critics' Choice Awards, scheduled to take place on Sunday 12 January.
