Brad Pitt's mother condemns Obama for support of same-sex marriage

The mother of actor Brad Pitt has slammed both gay marriage and President Barack Obama in a letter to her local newspaper – a move that may come as an embarrassment to her famously liberal, Democrat-leaning son.

In the missive posted on the website of Missouri's Springfield News-Leader, Jane Pitt attacked Obama as "a liberal who supports the killing of unborn babies and same-sex marriage".

She went on to commend Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney for sharing a "Christian conviction concerning homosexuality".

The letter is at apparent odds with her son's views on the matter. The star of Ocean's Eleven and Moneyball has been a vocal supporter of gay marriage, donating $100,000 to the campaign against California's anti-same sex union bill, Proposition 8.

And in a 2006 interview with Esquire he stated he and partner Angelina Jolie would only consider tying the knot "when everyone else in the country who wants to be married is legally able".

The celebrity couple are also on seemingly friendly terms with the Obamas, meeting the president at the White House in January to discuss efforts against mass atrocities and sexual violence against women.

Pitt's mother's letter was initially published on July 3 in a newspaper that represents the Bible belt town where the actor spent his youth.

She wrote in response to an earlier message that had suggested it would be difficult for the reader as a Christian to vote for the Mormon Romney as president.

Jane Pitt said she also has differences with the Mormon religion, but defended the Republican candidate as a "family man with high morals, business experience, who is against abortion, and shares Christian conviction concerning homosexuality".

This contrasts with Obama, who "did not hold a public ceremony to mark the National Day of Prayer, and is a liberal who supports the killing of unborn babies and same-sex marriage," Jane Pitt wrote.

After initial confusion over whether the letter was indeed penned by the film star's mother, the News-Leader added an editor's note to the online edition, stating that it had "verified the letter writer is the mother of actor Brad Pitt and local businessman Doug Pitt".

Pitt's famous son has yet to comment publicly on the letter.
