
A pika, or rock rabbit, collects food for the winter at the foot of the Daisetsu mountain system in Shikaoi, Hokkaido. Known in Japan as Ezonakiusagi, or the crying rabbit of Hokkaido, this about 15-centimeter-long species is also called a "survivor of the ice age." It likes rocky stretches in mountains in a cool climate and sometimes makes high-pitched squeaks. By the time it finishes gathering fallen leaves and other food and storing them between rocks, the area will be covered with snow.
