Boyzone singer Stephen Gately remembered at local Dublin church on 10th anniversary of death

Boyzone star Stephen Gately's mum Margaret was in attendance for the singer's memorial mass on the 10th anniversary of his death.

Gately died at the age of 33 of a pulmonary oedema resulting from an undiagnosed heart condition at his home in Mallorca on this day exactly 10 years ago.

The singer was fondly remembered this morning at the St Lawrence O’Toole Church on Sheriff Street in Dublin where he had been laid to rest.

A volunteer at the church said: “Stephen’s name was mentioned as in like any of the community, it would be mentioned if it's their anniversary.”

They added that mum Margaret was at the mass but none of the Boyzone members were in attendance.

He was fondly remembered by his bandmate Keith Duffy who posted a picture of the two on Instagram.

Duffy said: “Chance made us colleagues. Love and laughter and fun made us best friends!

“I miss you brother 10 years ago today the good lord deemed you too good for this world.

“He needed an angel in heaven! Today I celebrate and reminisce all the fun and laughter ups and downs

“I love you Steo and I pray you continue to look over me. See you down the road, Stephanie. All my love, Kitty.”

The post received an outpouring of love as emotional fans offered their support.

One person said: “Stephen was a lovely guy the most sweetest human I’ve ever met. He is missed every day.”

Another person said: “Beautiful. Rest in perfect paradise, Steo. These guys are doing you proud but you know that as your there with them. God bless you.”

Ronan Keating posted a series of pictures on social media including one of the two of them together with the caption: “Miss ya, bro.”

Duffy revealed how the band celebrates Gately’s life and legacy instead of grieving.

He told Dublin Live: “Time is a great healer, we tend to celebrate his life now instead of getting upset about him.

"It’s a joyous experience, it’s not a sad experience anymore.”

He also said that Gately is always “very alive in Boyzone” for them and it’s “one of the things that bring us back together”.
