Boys Don't Cry is a new take on an issue that is quite common nowadays, except this time it's the man left holding the baby.
Dante is waiting for his A level results when his exgirlfriend Melanie arrives on his doorstep. And she's holding a baby. Before he knows it she's gone and he's left alone with a daughter that he has known for all of five minutes.
Melanie isn't coming back. As Dante's life spirals out of control, he has to learn to step up and take responsibility for his actions. Meanwhile, his brother Adam has issues of his own to deal with. As they are both solving their problems their worlds collide with devastating consequences. They will have to work together to rebuild their lives and come to terms with their responsibilities.
I think this book is brilliant. Malorie Blackman really shows off her skills by tackling many important issues in today's society, including single parenting, racism and homosexuality. This book, to me, single-handedly proves that she deserves to be the Children's Laureate.
I enjoyed this book so much that I read it all in one sitting. It is a gripping and engaging real-life issues book. I would recommend this book to teenagers, and I think it is aimed at both boys and girls.
Boys Don't Cry is a truly amazing book.
