Boys arrested on major road after allegedly taking stolen car on 150kph joyride through Canberra

Two 13-year-old boys have been arrested on a major road in Canberra after a late-night joyride through Civic, which allegedly included a dash through a red light to avoid pursuing police.

Shortly after 2:00am, police say officers spotted a silver Ford driving erratically on Alinga Street, and tried to stop it when it turned in to the Civic Bus Interchange.

Instead, the car allegedly sped off through a red light to evade police.

Police said about 10 minutes later the car was spotted doing 150 kilometres per hour in a 90kph zone on Parkes Way, where the driver again ignored police directions to stop.

Further along Parkes Way, a swarm of police officers arrested the two children after forcing the car to stop.

The owner of the car, which had been taken from Rivett earlier in the evening, was not aware it had been stolen.

The boys, one of whom was already on bail, were arrested and will appear in the ACT Childrens Court today.

They will face charges of burglary and driving offences.
