Boyfriend pops question to RNLI lifeboat crew partner in sneaky fake drill proposal

A lifeboat crew answered a stricken fiancé’s SOS as they lined up a fake training exercise to let him pop the question .

Sam Main called on the RNLI Aberdeen branch as he set up an elaborate proposal for girlfriend Kirsty Noble.

Crew member Kirsty was taking part in a medical initiative in the city’s Fishmarket Quay, where she would be working with a colleague doubling as a casualty suffering chest pains.

But she was stunned to discover the patient was none other than her boyfriend Sam – kitted our in RNLI yellow as part of the grand pretence.

The moment Kirsty Noble realised the 'colleague' she was working with was actually her boyfriend Sam Main (RNLI)

Sam was quickly down on one knee, ring in hand, asking Kirsty to marry him.

There was no heartache for Sam as Kirsty accepted his proposal to loud cheers and applause from the crafty crew who had been in on the ruse.

Kirsty said: “Surprised is an understatement; it was an amazing occasion and to spend it with my best friends was very special.”

Her relieved fiancé Sam added: “It was an amazing day and I’m delighted that she said yes! A lot of planning went into it so I’m so happy that it all went to plan. I’m really grateful to the whole RNLI team for all their help in making it possible!”.

Kirsty, a website designer by profession, is two years into her training and is a regular volunteer crew member on both all-weather and inshore lifeboats.

Lifeboat coxswain Davie Orr congratulated the couple on behalf of the crew, saying: “Aberdeen’s volunteer lifeboat crew is a very close-knit team - we go through the highs and lows of search and rescue missions together.

“Today was a special opportunity to share in the happiness of one of our own. We all wish Kirsty and Sam every happiness.”
