Police have arrested the boyfriend of a Melbourne woman whose week-long disappearance has prompted grave concerns for her welfare.

Ju "Kelly" Zhang, 33, was last seen at her home in Epping, in Melbourne's north, on Monday night.

She was wearing a pink pyjama top and shorts and was barefoot at the time.

She did not have any personal belongings on her except a mobile phone that police had been unable to locate on Saturday.

"Her disappearance is considered to be extremely out of character and police have strong concerns for her welfare," a Victoria Police spokesperson said.

Her partner, Joon Seong Tan, has told police Ms Zhang went for a walk on Monday and never returned, leaving her eight-year-old son at home with him.

She was reported missing on Tuesday.

"The information we have is that she would not have left her son with someone who was not a family member," Detective Inspector Andrew Stamper said on Saturday.

Mr Tan, 35, was arrested in Doncaster on Sunday afternoon and was assisting police with their enquiries.

Ms Zhang's former husband is taking care of their eight-year-old son and is assisting police.

Police yesterday asked Melbourne's Chinese community for assistance finding Ms Zhang.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
