Boy with cerebral palsy learns to play piano despite struggling to hold a pencil

An eight-year-old boy is defying the odds and learning to play the piano despite struggling to hold a pencil or walk independently due to his condition.

Lennie Street has cerebral palsy as a result of an extremely premature birth and isn't able to stand or walk independently and requires support for most tasks that we typically take for granted.

But with help from his mum Sally he is learning to play the piano in order to raise money for his school in Sheffield.

His mum Sally said: "Lennie attends a wonderful school called Paces Sheffield.

"This is a conductive education school where the focus is on independence, developing movement, function and personality.

"It's a non-maintained special school where the ethos is centred on children challenged daily on striving for their full potential.

"It is a very special place and we are thankful beyond measure that Lennie has the opportunity to attend.

"The building which Lennie and his friends are currently in isn't fit for purpose, so Lennie wants to raise money towards their new fundraising campaign 'a new home for Paces'.

"This will mean that they will have a brand new school and centre which will be absolutely amazing for the children and adults who attend."

To help raise the funds Lennie has decided to set himself the challenge of learning to play up to 100 songs on the piano at his home in Leeds.

He has even shared videos of him playing some of his favourite tunes.

His mum Sally has set up a Just Giving Page for Lennie to help him raise £750 for his school.

She added: "He's using his time during lockdown to play songs and dedicate them to people in return for sponsorship for his amazing school Paces in Sheffield."

If you want to donate to help Lennie's school to get a new building you can find the Just Giving page here.
