Terminally ill boy whose Yemeni mother fought for more than a year to visit him after being barred from entering the US due to the Trump administration's travel ban has pass away in hospital in California.

Abdullah Hassan, 2, died at the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said in a statement.

His father, Ali Hassan, told mourners before a funeral Saturday for his son Abdullah that the boy didn't die in vain. He says he hoped their struggle will lead to a change in US policy that will help other families reunite, the Associated Press (AP) reported.

Hassan is a US citizen and brought his son to California for medical treatment for a genetic brain disorder. His wife fought for more than a year for a visa to be able to see the boy before he passed away.

According to AP, Abdullah Hassan was buried in the California Islamic Cemetery in Lodi after prayers at a nearby mosque.
