Boy who died in hotel window fall was five years old

A boy who died in a fall from a hotel window was five years old, police have said.

South Yorkshire Police have appealed for information following the boy’s death in what was reported to be a fall from the Sheffield Metropolitan Hotel in Blonk Street at about 2.30pm on Wednesday.

The boy’s family are being supported by specially trained officers.

No formal identification has taken place yet.

Residents have spoken of their shock and sadness, with one witness saying that he "did not sleep at all" after seeing the little boy, Yorkshire Live is reporting.

The man, who did not want to be named, said:

"It was so upsetting. I came out here [onto Blonk Street] and saw the boy. There were police and ambulances here.

"I did not sleep at all last night. It was so sad."

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police said: "We are appealing for information after a child sadly died in Blonk Street area of Sheffield yesterday (18 August).

"It is reported that a five-year-old boy fell from the window of the Sheffield Metropolitan Hotel at around 2.30pm.

"The boy’s family are being supported by specially trained officers. No formal identification has taken place yet.

"Officers are now appealing for anyone with information to come forward."
