SASARAM: A 12-year-old boy, who got stuck in a gap between the pillar and a slab of a bridge over the Sone river at Nasariganj in Rohtas district, died while being taken to the sadar hospital on Thursday. Earlier, the boy was rescued after a 30-hour-long joint efforts by SDRF personnel, Bihar Rajya Pul Nirman Nigam Limited (BRPNNL) and the local administration.
According to officials, the rescue team dismantled a portion of the approach road of the bridge and pulled out the boy, Ranjan Kumar, alive. He was rushed to Sasaram sadar hospital in a critical condition, but was declared brought dead by the doctors there. On Wednesday, the boy, said to be mentally challenged, tried to scale through the bridge with the help of wires dangling beside the pillar. In the process, he fell into the vacant space between the pillar and the slab of the bridge, which links Rohtas district with Daudnagar in Aurangabad district.
His cries drew the attention of a woman, who informed the local villagers. On getting information, block development officer, circle officer and other officials reached the spot. They made all efforts, but the boy could not be pulled out from the tiny space, measuring less than on foot, in the night hours. Later, lighting arrangements were made on the spot through generator sets.
An SDRF team from Patna reached the site and toiled hard to reach the boy till Thursday noon. The SDRF personnel provided food, water and oxygen to the boy with the help of a bamboo and a pipe. For morale boost of the boy, the team kept him busy in conversation with his father Shatrudhan Prasad through his cellphone.
The 35-member SDRF team, comprising three officers, also sought the help of BRPNNL masons who had constructed the bridge, in the rescue operation. Finally, the boy was pulled out alive and sent to Sasaram sadar hospital, but could not be saved.
