Boy suffers serious head injuries after being hit by bus in Gosforth High Street

A boy has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after he was hit by a bus.

The 13-year-old was struck by the vehicle on Gosforth High Street at just after 5pm on Tuesday.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the collision and the youngster was taken to Royal Victoria Infirmary by ambulance.

A friend of the boy's family confirmed that the injuries to his legs would require surgery but that his condition was not life-threatening.

A spokesman for North East Ambulance Service said: “We had a call at 5.33pm for a boy who had been involved in a collision with a bus.

“We dispatched a paramedic ambulance and a trauma specialist unit.

“The boy was taken to the RVI with head and leg injuries.”

The road was closed in both directions between Regent Centre Metro Station and The Gosforth Hotel while police and ambulance worked at the scene.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said they received a call about the incident at just before 5.45pm and that officers were attempting to put a contraflow in place to ease congestion.

They said: “We sent officers down to the scene to deal with an RTC down at that location.

“The road was closed between the Gosforth Hotel and the Metro station."
