Boy suffered life-threatening injuries after being impaled on BMX handlebars in Roundhay Park

A young boy from Leeds was on the verge of bleeding to death after a freak incident in Roundhay Park.

Connor Osborne, from Gipton, was cycling through the park with his brother when he fell off his bike and the handlebar impaled him.

The youngster suffered serious injuries and lost a lot of blood - but his quick-thinking brother jumped to his rescue.

Jack Smith, 15, stemmed the flow of blood and bought his brother time as paramedics desperately rushed to the scene. He was quickly rushed to hospital and underwent life-saving surgery, but without the intervention of his brother, doctors said he may not have survived.

Jack, who used first aid techniques he had learned in the Cadets, has since been handed a national award for his bravery and quick-thinking.

Jack said: “To be honest I was quite shocked. I wasn’t expecting it at all but was very happy when I had won it.”

His mum Emma said: “Jack deserves everything he gets because but for him Connor wouldn’t be with us today. The paramedics said at the time that Connor could have bled to death without Jack helping.”

The teenager became the joint winner of the Amplifon Awards for Brave Britons 2020 Charity Champion.

Amplifon’s judges commented: “For any child to reach the finals of they must possess outstanding characteristics, and Jack showed those characteristics in abundance.

“He demonstrated courage and a calmness beyond his years and can now be proud that, beyond a question of doubt, he saved his brother’s life.”
