Boy struck by tram fighting for his life in hospital

A boy is battling to stay alive after he was struck by a tram whilst riding his bike last night.

The 10-year-old, is said to be in a critical condition in hospital after emergency services rushed to the scene.

Police have confirmed that the boy, who was evacuated by air ambulance, suffered a serious head injury and is a life-threatening condition.

Paramedics, fire crew and police were all pictured at the scene as attempts were made to rescue the boy.

Police also confirmed no arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing.

The collision, which happened on Droylsden Road in Audenshaw, Tameside, just after 7.30pm, prompted a major emergency service response.

Droylsden Road was closed between Williamson Street and Lumb Lane after the incident last night, according to a report in Manchester Evening News.

Pictures from the scene showed a police cordon with a tram stationed inside.

Greater Manchester Fire Service sent three fire engines, along with the technical rescue unit, to the scene.

There they assisted paramedics from the North West Ambulance Service.

Detectives are now urging anyone who witnessed the crash, which happened on a ‘relatively busy road’, to come forward.

Police Sergeant Andrew Page of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Our thoughts are currently with the young boy who remains in hospital receiving urgent medical attention.

“Our main priority at this stage is establishing the full circumstances surrounding this collision so we can provide his family with the answers they need.

“This collision occurred early evening on a relatively busy road so we’re confident there are people who may have witnessed the collision or be holding information or footage that could greatly assist our enquiries.

“We would urge anyone who thinks they be able to assist to get in touch as a matter of urgency.”

A spokesperson for the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Just after 7.30pm on Wednesday 1 September, fire crews were called to reports of a tram colliding with a pedestrian on Droylsden Road, Audenshaw.

“Three fire engines from Ashton, Phillips Park and Stalybridge, as well as the technical rescue unit from Ashton, quickly attended the incident.

“Firefighters helped make the area safe and assisted colleagues from North West Ambulance Service (NWAS).

“GMFRS crews remain in attendance.”

TfGM’s Head of Metrolink, Danny Vaughan, said: “This is a deeply upsetting incident and our immediate concerns and thoughts are with the young boy – who we hope more than anything will be ok – and his family.

“The collision has been referred to the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) and is now the subject of an ongoing police investigation and we will do whatever we can to support this.”

A spokesperson for the Office of Rail and Road said: “An ORR railway safety inspector is assisting Greater Manchester Police conduct investigations as we work with them, the Rail Accident Investigation Branch and Manchester Metrolink to establish the full circumstances surrounding this collision.

“Our thoughts remain with the young boy who was injured.”
