Boy severed teen’s artery with meat cleaver in brutal attack at Scots house

A boy of 14 carried out a vicious attack with a meat cleaver he had previously used to “chop up lambs”.

The teenager inflicted horrific injuries on a man, 19, who police found lying in a pool of his own blood.

A court heard the schoolboy told officers a relative was a butcher and added: “The blade he uses to chop up the lambs was in the kitchen drawer.

"I’ve done up the lambs with him and that’s what I used to hit the guy.”

The boy, who can’t be named for legal reasons, denied assaulting Joe Ather to his severe injury and permanent disfigurement but changed his plea to guilty during a trial at Hamilton Sheriff Court.

A woman, 24, had her not guilty plea to the charge accepted.

The attack happened outside a house in East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, on July 6, 2019. The victim needed emergency treatment after an artery in his head was severed. He also suffered a deep wound to his shoulder.

Joe, now 21, said he was going to see a friend when the boy and a woman came out of a house and attacked him.

The court heard the boy struck him six times with a meat cleaver. The boy, now 17, also admitted threatening to stab another male at East Kilbride Shopping Centre on November 29, 2019.

Sheriff Colin Dunipace deferred sentence for a criminal justice social work report and allowed the boy to remain on bail.
