Boy's horrific injuries after firework he was playing with exploded in his hand

A teenagers fingers were blown straight off when a firework exploded in his hand.

Syafiq Haikal Shaharrudin, 13, was playing around with the explosive devices outside his home in northern Malaysia's Terengganu State when one went off in his right hand.

The horrifying blast was intense it reduced the youngster's hand to pulp.

Mirror Online has decided not to publish pictures of the injuries.

The boy's mum, 40-year-old Zainab Mohd, heard Syafiq screaming in pain moment after the explosion.

Her cousin then ran to tell the woman what had happened.

Syafiq was taken to Besut Hospital where doctors worked to salvage what they could of his severely damaged hand.

The teenagers fingers were destroyed in the incident and he suffered severe damage to his wrist.

According to local media reports fireworks are labelled "explosive devices" by the Malaysian authorities.

Anyone found illegally letting them off can be handed a one-month prison sentence or a 100-MYR (£19) fine.

Two brands of smaller fireworks are permitted by the authorities.
