A young boy is in a serious condition in hospital after he was pulled from the water at a popular Irish swimming spot yesterday.
The child was swimming in Lough Sheelin, a lake located at a meeting point of counties Westmeath, Meath and Cavan.
He was recovered from the water following a near-drowning incident shortly before 3pm.
Gardai and emergency services attend the scene and the boy was rushed to Temple Street Children's Hospital.
His condition is currently described as serious and gardai say their investigations are ongoing.
They said in a statement: "Gardai attended the scene of an incident at Lough Sheelin yesterday afternoon, Tuesday 20th July 2021.
"A male youth was recovered from the water shortly before 3pm.
"He was taken to CHI, Temple Street where his condition is described as serious.
"Inquiries are ongoing."

Earlier this week, teenager Jay Moffett died following a swimming accident in Co Down.
The 13-year-old, who has been described as a "little gentleman" with a "huge smile", died after he got into difficulty swimming at a lake in the village of Scarva on Monday.
His father desperately tried to save his son as firefighters arrived but he later passed away in hospital.
Jay's passing has caused an outpouring of grief in the community who are shocked and saddened at the loss of someone so young.
A talented young boxer, his former club Tullyish Amateur Boxing Club said in a statement: "Tullylish ABC are deeply saddened following the tragic and untimely passing of our much loved club member Jay Moffett.
"All of us at the club pass on our sincerest condolences to Wayne, Caroline, Ollie and Daisy. Rest easy Jay, we will all miss that big smile."
Local football club Scarva Rangers FC also expressed its condolences to the teenager's family.
