Boy rescued as mother dies in Adelaide house fire

A fire investigator looks through the house.

A five-year-old boy has survived a house fire in Adelaide's northern suburbs that killed his 37-year-old mother.

The boy was rescued from inside the Paralowie house by firefighters and police officers who responded to the blaze about 12:30am.

Twenty firefighters worked to extinguish the fire at the Panto Avenue home but were unable to save the woman.

Her son was taken to the Women's and Children's Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said he was in a stable condition in hospital.

Neighbour Andrew Bates said he ran straight over when he saw smoke billowing from the house.

"Me and the other neighbours were trying to see if anyone was in there and then we kicked the front door in and we walked into the house but then the heat was so hot we couldn't go any further," he said.

"So we went around the back and kicked all the back doors in, smashed the windows to get the smoke out and we could hear the little boy still screaming."

No-one else was in the house when the fire started.

A police officer who rescued the boy was taken to the Lyell McEwin Hospital with a laceration to his arm.

Three other police officers were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

The Metropolitan Fire Service said the blaze started in the main bedroom and the cause was still under investigation.

Police are preparing a report for the coroner.
