Boy rescued after getting stuck in chimney in WA home

Emergency workers prepare to remove the boy from an opening in the wall.

Emergency services have rescued an eight-year-old boy after he climbed into a chimney at his home in Western Australia's south and got stuck.

When officers arrived at the Katanning home on Sunday, the boy could be heard breathing but was in considerable difficulty, police said.

A female police officer was able to lie down on her back and use her arms to support the boy's legs while she and the boy's mother tried to calm him.

Firefighters and paramedics arrived at the scene to assist.

Plasterboard and brickwork were carefully removed and an oxygen line inserted into the opening to help the boy breathe.

More bricks were then painstakingly removed until there was a hole big enough to get the boy out of the opening.

He was taken to hospital as a precaution, but is now back at home with his family.

The female police officer received some on-site treatment from paramedics.
