Boy racer charged for doing doughnuts on Asda car park in front of police 'beggars belief,' says sergeant

Police have cracked down on bad driving in Livingston Town centre.

Sergeant Iain Wells told councillors and community representatives that a joint operation had been mounted with traffic officers.

It is the latest attempt to solve long running problems in the town centre particularly centred on the Asda car park

Several young drivers have now been reported for offences including dangerous driving, drink driving and multiple speeding offences.

One has been charged for doing doughnuts- skidding a car at speed in a circle- in the Asda car park, in front of officers.

“It beggars belief”, Sgt Wells told members of Livingston South Local Area Committee.

Another driver has been reported for damage caused after driving up a steep grass embankment in the town.

Writing on social media police officers said: “We secured CCTV images of the incident and as a reward for the driver’s efforts they received an ASBO for driving in a careless and inconsiderate manner.”

Following growing reports of anti-social use of cars in the town police launched Operation Kazoo with traffic officers and the community teams, addressing young drivers specifically on driver safety.

On social media police said: “Several people have been reported for road traffic offences. We will continue to focus on providing appropriate advice to drivers and if necessary charging where offences come to light.”

In his report Sgt Wells said: “Through a proactive, intelligence led, targeted approach to priority locations throughout West Lothian, overall injuries in collisions have reduced by over 40%. In addition there has been a significant increase of more than 30% for people reported for dangerous driving, speeding, disqualified driving, no driving licence and no insurance. “

Sgt Wells said that both operations were designed to improve road safety.
