A 7-year-old accidentally shot his 2-year-old brother after finding a gun in their family's truck while waiting for their mom outside a California shopping center.

The shooting took place December 3 while the boys' mother was outside the vehicle in a Rancho Cucamonga shopping center parking lot, ABC News reported.

The 7-year-old discovered a loaded firearm in the truck's glove compartment and accidentally discharged it, shooting his younger brother, according to authorities.

Law enforcement officials are investigating the circumstances, including the gun's ownership and how it came to be unsecured in the vehicle.

As of now, the shooting appears to have been accidental, spokesperson Gloria Huerta told the outlet.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department has stated that a report will be sent to the District Attorney's office for review, and potential charges could be brought under California laws governing firearm storage and child access.

Authorities continue their investigation, urging anyone with information to come forward.
