Boy is only 5, and he's already been shot 2 separate times in Chicago

CHICAGO _ A 5-year-old boy who accidentally shot himself in the hand Tuesday evening had been shot in the face a year and a half ago while walking with his mother on the South Side, according to Chicago police.

The boy was taken in good condition to Comer Children's Hospital after the accidental shooting. That's the same hospital where he was taken in June 2016 after he was shot in the jaw while walking with his mother, brother and a family friend, authorities said.

Details of the latest shooting were sketchy. Authorities initially said the boy was not shot but injured in the hand when the gun he was holding discharged about 6:20 p.m. in the 8100 block of South Coles Avenue.

But when the boy arrived at Comer, the wound was classified as a gunshot, according to Officer Thomas Sweeney, a Chicago police spokesman. He was listed in good condition.

Police were questioning a man about how the boy got the gun and charges were pending.

The earlier shooting happened on June 28, 2016, in the 6400 block of South King Drive in the Parkway Gardens neighborhood. Police said the boy and his family heard fireworks followed by gunshots.

One of the bullets hit the boy. Another crashed through a window and a wall and struck a 28-year-old woman in the head. She was taken in good condition to Stroger Hospital.

Police said the shooters were in a dark-colored four-door vehicle and they were firing at a group of people who gathered in a building's courtyard. Neither the boy nor the woman was the intended target, police said.

One of the boy's relatives told the Tribune at the time that the boy was "going to pull through."

The boy was among three people injured in shootings in Chicago between Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, police said.
