Boy in nappy found alone on street in 1°C on Christmas Day as family slept

A toddler who wandered out of his family home barefoot and wearing just a nappy was rescued thanks to a Good Samaritan.

Two-year-old Luis Angel Guzman had toddled out of his family home on Christmas Day as temperatures plummeted to 1°C, while his aunt and grandad were asleep.

The boy was heard crying by Marlene Melvin, who walking with her 10-year-old son to her mother's house, close by.

Ms Melvin told the New York Post: "I heard a baby cry. I was with my 10-year-old son, and he was like, ‘Mum, is that a baby?

“When we got in front of the house, I said, ‘Oh my God, yeah, that’s a real baby.’ The baby saw me and he picked up his arms like, ‘Pick me up'.”

She helped the shaking boy, taking him to her parents' home to find him some clothes before seeking help at a nearby fire station.

The firefighters called an ambulance to take the boy to hospital as they began knocking door to door to locate the boy's family.

His mum had popped out to buy the boy some juice, leaving the child with the other adults in the house.

But it seems the restless boy went out searching for his mum.

The mum told the Post: "My sister called and told me. I worried that something could’ve happened to him, that he could’ve been hit by a car or something, something ugly."

She added that she wanted to thank Ms Melvin and her son "from the bottom of her heart" for finding and helping her son.
