A 12-year-old boy is fighting for his life at Perth Children's Hospital after falling from a height at a construction site in Perth's south east.

Police say the boy was rushed to Perth Children's Hospital around 8pm on Monday night after he was discovered at the building site on Virginia Avenue in Maddington.

It's alleged the boy was not alone and it is unclear how he gained access to the building site.

Acting Police Commissioner Col Blanch told ABC Radio Perth the incident is being investigated by Armadale detectives and by WorkSafe.

"The investigation is ongoing but it is a strong reminder that work sites and workplaces are very dangerous places, particularly for kids," he said. "The investigation will focus on the security of that place and how those kids got in there."

The boy remains in hospital in critical condition.
