Boy felt electricity pulse through his body as pal critically injured by railway power line

A boy yesterday said he felt electricity pulse through his body as his pal was critically injured in a horror accident near a railway line.

A 12-year-old boy was left after the cable he was swinging about hit power lines behind the public footbridge the youngsters were walking on in Bishopbriggs, near Glasgow, on Sunday evening.

His 11-year-old pal said he felt the huge power surge which hit his pal and then he ran to get help.

And his mum said she wanted to warn other young people of the dangers – describing the incident as “an accident waiting to happen”.

The uninjured boy said his friend had picked up what they thought was a piece of short rope and was swinging it when part of it went over the wall causing the “ground to shake”.

In shock, he ran to a nearby neighbour’s house to get help for his injured friend, who was then unresponsive. He said: “Before the ambulance came he was just lying there.

"When it happened I felt it all up my arms and legs. I had to run away from it and jump on to the grass. The vibrations were coming up my legs and arms.”

Fire crews, paramedics and police were called to the scene at 6.30pm. The mum of the uninjured boy said she was at the scene within minutes of a call from her son, saying he thought his pal was dead.

She said: “The two saw what they thought was a bit of rope on the grass. It was a cable. The wee boy had thrown it up over the wall and went to tug it back and that’s when it happened.” A neighbour who ran to help saw a “jet of flames” as the boy was electrocuted.

Police said the boy had a “number of very serious injuries”, adding: “His condition is believed to be life threatening.”
