A five-year-boy has died after being pulled from a waterhole.

Emergency services were called to Bents Basin in Sydney's south-western fringe, following reports a five-year-old boy was unresponsive after being pulled from the water.

Members of the public tried to revive him until NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived and took over.

The boy was treated at the scene before being taken to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition, where he later died.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
