Boy choked to death by rope swing

KRABI: A 12-year-old boy was asphyxiated to death after becoming entangled by the neck on a homemade swing at his house in Muang district, local police said.

Pol Lt Col Chartchai Nakpaksee, a senior investigator at Muang district police station, confirmed the death of the boy, identified as Thawin Chua-sanga, on Monday.

Police were alerted after neighbours rushed the boy to a local hospital, where he died shortly afterwards.

According to the police, Thawin was playing with his friends at his house in Bang Chong Plee when he decided to hop on the makeshift swing, which was made out of an old tyre suspended by a rope from the eaves of his house.

Thawin placed his neck on the top of the swing, which then starting to rapidly spin -- causing the rope to tighten around his neck and strangle him.

His friends told police that after they unsuccessfully tried to loosen the rope, they went inside the house to notify Thawin's mother, before they ran to the next door neighbour, Nipol Sabsoonneon, 59, who was resting at his house.

Mr Nipol took the boy, who by then had become unconscious, down from the swing and drove him to the main road to wait for the local emergency response team to pick him up.

The response team was stationed in a nearby community centre to respond to emergency situations in the locality, such as fire and/or natural disasters.

The team arrived shortly afterwards and transferred Thawin to Krabi Hospital, where the boy was later pronounced dead.

Doctors at the hospital said the boy arrived at the hospital too late, because of failed attempts to revive him.

Thawin died from asphyxiation, and his neck had extensive bruising from the rope, they said.
