Boy charged with murdering motorcyclist could face trial within months

A boy charged with murdering a motorcyclist in Hartcliffe could stand trial in October.

The 15-year-old appeared before a District Judge yesterday (April 8) charged with murdering Michael-Lee Rice, and causing danger to road users.

He was charged after Mr Rice was killed when his motorcycle crashed with a parked van on Fulford Road shortly before 6pm on Friday (April 5).

Police are investigating whether an object was obstructing the road at this time.

Today the boy, from Gloucester, was due to appear at Bristol Crown Court.

But he was not produced from secure accommodation in Milton Keynes.

The Recorder of Bristol His Honour Judge Peter Blair QC was told that, after the boy's appearance at Bristol Magistrates' Court, a time window of 48 hours is available to consider the boy's bail.

The judge adjourned the case for a hearing at 12.30pm tomorrow with the boy present.

He said October 2 would be the likely date for a trial, coinciding with the first day of a High Court judge's term at the crown court.

Detectives investigating the fatal collision have launched a dedicated web page appealing for information.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police  said: "Anyone who saw the incident or who has dashcam, CCTV or mobile phone footage which could help can upload it here  bit.ly/2I48Mvn .

"Alternatively call 101 and ask to speak to officers working on Operation Munich."
