Boy charged over crash that killed teenage girl

Police allege the boy was driving a stolen van that slammed into two trucks after a police chase.

A 17-year-old boy has been charged over a crash that claimed the life of a teenage girl at Ballan, north-west of Melbourne.

The girl was a passenger in an allegedly stolen van that slammed into two trucks after a police chase on the Western Highway on Tuesday afternoon.

The teenage boy was arrested in Ballarat later on Tuesday.

He faced an out-of-sessions hearing on Wednesday night charged with culpable driving, dangerous driving causing death, conduct endangering life, theft of motor vehicle and aggravated burglary.

He was remanded in custody to appear at a Children's Court at a later date.

Shortly after the crash, Assistant Commissioner for Road Police Doug Fryer said the police pursuit went for about four minutes.

"We've had a tragedy here," he said on Tuesday.

"Local police have spotted a vehicle that was wanted, they've put their lights and sirens on to pull it over, and this vehicle made a conscious decision not to stop.

"After a very short pursuit, this vehicle has hit a stationary vehicle at significant speed and a female occupant of that fleeing vehicle has tragically died."

Detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit have been investigating, overseen by the Professional Standards Command.
