Boy charged as an adult with bringing gun to Barrington High School

Dec. 02--A 16-year-old Barrington High School student was charged as an adult Tuesday with illegally possessing a firearm at the school, officials said.

Kyle Johnson may face additional charges when the case goes before a grand jury, authorities said. Lake County Circuit Court Judge Christen Bishop set Johnson's bond at $75,000.

The school went on lockdown Monday, police said, after a faculty member reported a student had a gun in a washroom. Police responded, and using the school video surveillance system, located Johnson and arrested him.

The gun was not loaded and was never pointed at anyone during the incident, but was found in Johnson's backpack with ammunition and a variety of prescription drugs and marijuana, police said.

Johnson, of Barrington, was initially charged as a juvenile with seven counts relating to bringing a gun on school property and possession of controlled substances.

School officials suspended Johnson for 10 days, and recommended his expulsion to the school board, Barrington District 220 spokeswoman Morgan Delack said.

Prosecutors typically will consider the other charges when they bring the case before a grand jury, said Cynthia Trujillo Vargas, a spokeswoman for the Lake County state's attorney's office.

Johnson was being held at the Depke Juvenile Justice Complex in Vernon Hills, and officials would not immediately say whether he posted bond or not.
