Fishermen have come to the rescue of a boy attacked by a dingo at a popular tourist destination.

Rangers are investigating after the 12-year-old was bitten on the back at K'gari, formerly Fraser Island, in southeast Queensland on Sunday.

Two children and an adult were playing in shallow water at Kingfisher Bay when a tagged male dingo approached from behind about 12.15pm.

After the dingo bit the boy, people fishing nearby ran over to scare the animal off with a stick.

The dingo moved away but followed the group back to their accommodation, rangers said.

"The group were carrying a dingo stick but put it on nearby rocks before entering the water," a Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation statement said.

The boy was treated by paramedics for superficial puncture wounds and a laceration, and did not require further treatment.

The dingo was still in the area when rangers arrived.

The animal was identified and dingo safe information has been passed on to local fishers and staff at nearby private accommodation, rangers said.

"Rangers will monitor the dingo and provide further education to residents and visitors to the island," the statement said.

It is the latest incident after two attacks over the Australia Day long weekend.

A woman was bitten on the leg when she tried to stop a dingo from taking her bag at Lake McKenzie on the island.

The next day a two year old was attacked in a Lake McKenzie car park.

More than 20 dingo incidents were reported on the island in 2024.
