Boy airlifted to hospital with burns to face and back after 'pretty traumatic' bonfire mishap

The boy suffered multiple burns but was in a stable condition before he was airlifted to hospital.

A 12-year-old boy has suffered extensive burns to his face, arms, legs and back after throwing "a flammable liquid" on a bonfire on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula, firefighters say.

Paramedics were called to a home in Blairgowrie about 4:00pm where they found the injured boy, who appeared to be in a stable condition.

The boy was being flown to the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne for treatment, an Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said.

The Country Fire Authority's Acting Commander Sam Webb said he understood firefighters discovered a "pretty traumatic scene" upon arrival.

"A young boy … had suffered burns, and it's probably a timely reminder for anyone under the age of 18 to have an adult present when there are fires," he said.

Mr Webb said it was not yet clear exactly how the boy had gotten hold of the flammable liquid, but urged all families to watch bonfires carefully over the long weekend.

"Make sure we keep a fire in a properly constructed pit, don't overload the fire or put flammable liquids on that's going to endanger anyone else," he said.

"Have a slow, calm fire to toast those marshmallows or something similar while you're camping."

Firefighting crews did not need to put out any flames upon arrival, a CFA spokesperson said.
