BENGALURU: A nine-year-old boy adopted from an NGO in early 2021 by a couple through State Adoption Resource Agency was sent back in just about two months after the adoptive father died following cardiac arrest.
Authorities said the boy has undergone emotional trauma.
“After the father passed away, the mother took a decision to return the boy to the government and the kid is currently back with the NGO,” said officials from the state women and child welfare department, adding that the death of the breadwinner turned the family’s plans upside down. It could not be confirmed if the cause of death was Covid, the officers said, adding that adoption disruptions, though not new, will have a long-lasting impact on such children.
In yet another case, a couple from Karnataka who had adopted a three-year-old girl from Madhya Pradesh returned the child. “The girl had undergone a lot of trauma earlier. She was physically fit, but faced certain issues following the trauma she had undergone when she was very small. The adoptive parents initially accepted the girl, but later felt that they were not equipped to handle the situation. They underwent counselling and decided to return the child,” said counsellors from Karnataka, who dealt with the case.
Though it was a case of disruption in adoption, the law allows it in the best interest of the child, said counsellors. “Considering the future of the girl, it is not bad as the adoptive parents were not prepared for the same,” the counsellors told TOI.
