Boy, 8, miraculously survives two days in woods by eating snow and sheltering under log

A missing 8-year-old boy miraculously survived two days in the woods by eating snow and sheltering under a log.

Nante Niemi went to find firewood for his family's campsite at the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park in Michigan, US on May 6.

The boy's concerned parents started to panic when Nante failed to return in the afternoon and immediately reported him missing to police.

Over 150 local officers searched the remote park by foot, air and water but he was unable to be located by cops.

Several roads were also filled with snow and blocked off which hampered the search, according to police.

The boy had been following a trail on Sunday but when the path ran out he decided to stay put.

Michigan State Police said: "He figured the best thing to do was to just stop and wait."

The boy remarkably survived after he “covered up with branches and leaves for warmth and also blanketed the log he was under. He didn’t have any food but ate clean snow for hydration", police said.

Nante was eventually two miles from the campsite found by family friends and volunteers. However, he had to be carried after he was suffering from fatigue due to spending days in the woods.

Fortunately, he was returned to his parents in good health.

Eli Talsma, a friend of Niemi’s, was one of the volunteers searching for Nante and immediately ran over to him after hearing he had been found.

She told Upper Michigan Source: “As soon as I heard that, I grabbed my bag that was on the ground and I started sprinting over to him.

“I just ran over to him and I gave him the biggest hug. I was so relieved once I saw him.

“And I get over this little, tiny hill, and all I see is this little, tiny, white sweatshirt, and he goes, ‘Eli?’ And I just ran up over to him and I gave him the biggest hug. I was so relieved once I saw him.”

Nante told his family he had been sleeping in the woods when a helicopter flew over him and woke him up.

And then the next day when he was standing and walking around, a helicopter flew over him - oblivious it was searching for him.

With there being no mobile phone coverage in the area, it made the search search extra challenging, according to police.

Hurley School District, where the missing boy attends, released a statement thanking volunteer's who came out to search for the 8-year-old.

It said: “Although our emotions are very raw at this time, we want to acknowledge the extreme outpouring of love and support we received over the past few days."
