An eight-year-old boy has died following a multi-vehicle collision on the A30 in Cornwall, which also left another child in a critical condition and a woman in her seventies seriously injured.
Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed the fatal incident occurred on the westbound carriageway near Connor Downs, close to Hayle, on the morning of 29 May. The eight-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.
A five-year-old boy was taken to Bristol Children’s Hospital, where he remains in a critical state.
A woman in her seventies is being treated for serious injuries at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth. Another woman, aged in her forties, was also treated at Derriford Hospital before being discharged.
Police said the two women and two children were travelling in the same car.
A local man in his 60s was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He was treated for minor injuries.
He has been released under investigation while the investigation continues.
Police are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage following the collision.
Detective Inspector Andy Heath, of Devon and Cornwall Police, said: “Our thoughts are with those who have been affected by this incident.
“Specialists from the Roads Policing Team and Serious Collisions Investigation Team have continued inquiries through the weekend, and the investigation team will be pursuing several lines of inquiry over the coming weeks.
“It is not possible to provide detail of the cause of the collision, and I would ask the public not to speculate.
“Further information will be made available in due course. Our priority at this time is to support those that have been directly affected by this tragic incident and to secure the evidence required for a thorough investigation.”
