Boy, 8, dies after being diagnosed with cancer three times

A little boy has died after being diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer for the third time.

Lee Belgium, 8, beat Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia twice in two years and looked set to be given a bone marrow transplant.

But the cancer returned for a third time late last year and NHS doctors told the brave youngster's family there was nothing left they could do.

His distraught parents Clare Boxall and Simon Belgium said on Saturday Lee had passed away, Bristol Post reports.

The family, of Emersons Green, Gloucestershire, shared the tragic news on the Facebook group Fight for Lee’s life.

Clare and Simon had desperately tried to raise money for Lee to be treated at a facility in Turkey.

More than £80,000 had been raised for Lee’s treatment and he was set to travel to Turkey at the end of December, however a combination of a strong course of chemotherapy, pneumonia, and a fungal infection in his lung meant that he was too unwell to travel at the time.

Lee was expected to fly across the continent at the end of March to begin the trials, but sadly that never happened.

The youngster loved Star Wars, superheroes and video games, his heartbroken parents said.

Speaking last year, Clare recalled the moment her son's condition deteriorated after an infection.

"It was horrible, I couldn’t stop crying. Knowing your child was nearly gone I didn’t know what to do. But, the nurses fought so amazingly to save him," the mum said.

More than 110,000 people die of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia every year globally.
