The close-knit community of Swansea on Tasmania's east coast is grieving the loss of a six-year-old boy, killed by a log truck being reversed by his father.
News of the boy's death was known "within an hour" around the town, according to Glamorgan Spring Bay mayor Michael Kent.
"The community is devastated with the news of such a tragedy," he said.
"My personal heartfelt love goes out to the family.
"The family are a hardworking family, [they are] involved in the community in Swansea.
"No family should have to endure the loss of a young child. It is beyond comprehension."
Mr Kent said many people in the community knew the family.
Swansea residents 'comforting each other'
Emergency services were called to a yard at Gordon Street, Swansea at 4:10pm on Sunday.
A log truck with a trailer attached was slowly being reversed against a fence when it hit the young boy, who was behind it.
He was unable to be saved and died at the scene.
"The majority of people in Swansea without a doubt knew about the accident within an hour," Councillor Kent said.
"The whole little township has been grieving since yesterday afternoon.
"[Faced with tragedy], small communities get together and comfort each other. That is the way it should be and that is certainly what is happening in Swansea."
Police said the boy's 39-year-old father was distraught but uninjured.
Transport authority investigations into the incident are continuing.
In May, a three-year-old boy died when he walked behind a car being driven by his father at Badgers Head near Green Beach.
The boy died en route to the Launceston General Hospital.
