Boy, 5, gets life-saving transplant after donors queue for hours in rain to help

A boy has had a life-saving stem cell transplant after a record number of donors offered to help.

Oscar Saxelby-Lee, five, was given just three months to find a match after falling critically ill with aggressive leukaemia.

His appeal led to more than 10,000 volunteers being tested, including 4,855 who queued for hours in the rain at his school.

A match was made in April and the op took place this week.

Parents Olivia Saxelby, 26, and Jamie Lee, 23, wrote on Oscar’s Facebook appeal page on Wednesday: “Thank you to everyone who registered.

“It has been very emotional. These cells are special and we have every hope this will save our beautiful boy.

“We cannot wait for the day that Oscar meets his donor.”

The lad was diagnosed with the rare cancer three days after last Christmas.

DKMS, the charity that tests the swabs, said its previous record for people at a registration event was 2,000.

Olivia said previously: “We felt like we could not see light at the end of the tunnel.

“But when looking at Oscar’s cheeky smile, bravery and determination, we managed to pull our strength together again. He is a true warrior.”
