Boy, 5, dies from head injuries after mirror falls on him in department store

A five-year-old boy has died from head injuries after a mirror fell on him inside a high street department store.

Police and ambulance crews arrived at the scene on July 27 to discover the young boy with a serious head injury.

He was given first aid at the Fenwick store in Colchester, Essex before being taken to hospital in a critical condition.

Today, Essex Police announced the tragic news that the youngster had died from his injuries.

Chief Inspector Rob Huddleston, District Commander for Colchester, said: “I know I speak for all of my teams when I say that we are extremely saddened by today’s news.

“This is a truly heart-breaking incident and all of our thoughts are with the boy’s loved ones.

“On behalf of my attending officers, I would also like to thank the members of the public and store staff who went above and beyond to assist us."

Essex Police said the incident remains "under investigation," but it is understood the youngster's injuries were caused when a mirror fell on top of him inside the store.

The director of Fenwick has spoken following the latest news, announcing the Colchester store will remain closed tomorrow (August 4) as a "mark of respect".

Director Mia Fenwick said: "On behalf of the Fenwick family, and the entire Fenwick team, it is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of a young boy following an incident at our Colchester store last week.

"All our thoughts and prayers are with the child’s family and friends at this very painful time.

"We continue to work closely with the local authorities to understand how this happened.

"Our Colchester store will remain closed tomorrow as a mark of respect."

Specialist officers are supporting the boy's family and no further details have been released at this time.

The police spokesperson said last week that the force was supporting an investigation into the incident alongside Colchester Borough Council.
