Boy, 6, dies after being found in stream near home in Ballina, Co Mayo

The body of a six-year-old boy has been found in a stream close to his home in Ballina, Co Mayo.

Gardai took the boy from the water near Childers Heights in Ballina this afternoon.

The young child was rushed to Mayo University Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The boy had been reported missing just a short time earlier and is believed to live close by.

Gardai from Ballina and local residents had been searching the banks of the River Moy for a time before the body was found.

A garda spokesperson said: "Shortly after 1pm Gardaí received reports that a 6-year-old boy had gone missing from his home at Rehins Fort, Ballina. Following a search, involving Gardaí and local residents, the boy was rescued a short time later from a nearby stream close to the river Moy.

"The young boy was treated at the scene by Gardaí and Emergency Service personnel and removed by ambulance to Mayo University Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

"The local Coroner has been notified of the death and a post-mortem will been arranged. For guidance – Local Gardaí say they are treating the matter as a tragic accident."
