A four-year-old boy has been taken to hospital after being savaged by a dog.

The young child was mauled in Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire on Saturday night.

Police Scotland said on Monday it was fortunate his serious injuries are not life-threatening.

Officers launched an investigation.

A spokesman said: “On the evening of Saturday, April 2, officers received a report of a four-year-old boy sustaining serious, but not life-threatening injuries, following an incident with a dog in the Craigielea Road area of Duntocher, Clydebank.

“We can confirm enquiries are ongoing.”

He is the latest child to be attacked by a dog in Britain.

Last week, a two-year-old boy died after being mauled by a pet in Egdon, Worcestershire.

An eight-year-old boy was rushed to hospital after he was bitten on the face in Brook Vale, Cannock in March.

In the same incident, a six-year-old girl and a 35-year-old woman were attacked.

A 51-year-old female was arrested on suspicion of owning a dog dangerously out of control causing injury.

Detectives said she had been bailed while their investigation continued.

And one-year-old Bella-Rae Birch died in an attack by the family’s American Bully XL at her home in St Helens, Merseyside, last month.

The Office for National Statistics figures show in the decade up to 1991, 15 people were killed by dogs but in the past ten years that has more than doubled to 32.
