A four-year-old boy is in hospital after falling eight metres from a window in a Sydney building.

Paramedics including a specialist medical team treated the child for suspected head injuries after the fall on George Street, Mortdale, about 2pm.

He was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

"Injuries from falls like this have the potential to cause external injuries, but it's the potential serious internal injuries that cause us the most concern," NSW Ambulance Inspector Garren Constable said in a statement on Friday.

"These kinds of accidents can happen in seconds, so it's important to take extra care at home especially during the school holidays."
