Boy, 3, dies after being hit in 'heartbreaking' horror tractor accident on farm

A three-year-old boy has died after being struck by a tractor.

Detectives have launched an investigation following the incident on a farm in the Tottington area of Bury, Greater Manchester, this afternoon.

The child's family managed to flag down a passing ambulance as they drove to hospital at around 12.45pm on Saturday.

He was pronounced dead by paramedics before he could be taken for treatment.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed the accident happened on farmland off Bentley Hall Road, with paramedics stopped on Rochdale Old Road.

The force was contacted by the ambulance service.

Officers remain at the farm, and are working with the Health and Safety Executive as part of the probe.

A scene was in place on Rochdale Old Road to allow for initial enquiries to take place, but the cordon has since been lifted.

It's understood police are not looking for anyone in connection with the incident.

Chief Inspector Ian Partington, of GMP’s Bury district, said: "This is a heart-breaking incident that has seen a young boy tragically lose his life and my thoughts go out to his family and loved ones who will be utterly devastated by today’s events.

"Despite his family flagging down an ambulance while driving him towards hospital quickly as they could, the boy sadly could not be saved after the best efforts of paramedics; I can’t imagine how distressing this was for those involved.

"We are working to ensure that a full investigation is carried out, and the farmland where we understand this incident to have occurred remains cordoned off to allow our investigators and partners from the HSE to conduct thorough enquiries to establish exactly what has occurred here."

There was also another unrelated collision as the emergency services arrived at Rochdale Old Road.

A minor collision took place on Bell Lane between a police car and another vehicle.

An officer in the police car was uninjured but occupants in the other vehicle were taken to hospital as a precaution.
