Boy, 2, suffers chemical burn after Fairy washing tablet gets stuck to clothes

A toddler had to be rushed to hospital with chemical burns after a partially dissolved Fairy laundry tablet stuck to the inside of his jumper during washing.

Sam Clusker, two, from Dunfermline, Fife, was left screaming in agony after wearing the top during a day out with his grandma.

When his mum Cheyenne Manson investigated, she spotted a large red burn covering a huge area of skin between the toddler's underarm and belly button.

Cheyenne, 27, told the Daily Record: "When I took his jumper and vest off his skin was bright red and he wouldn't let me touch him.

"It looked like the tablet had stuck to the seam on the inside of his jumper and it had taken the day to work its way through his vest and directly onto his skin."

The 27-year-old wrapped Sam in a blanket and rushed him straight to the A&E department at Queen Margaret Hospital, Dunfermline on Sunday.

Medics immediately put him into a shower to try and wash off as much of the chemical as possible.

He was then transferred to the Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy where further tests showed residual chemical from the tablet still on his skin and he had endure a further 15 minute dousing in the shower.

Cheyenne said: "Even then it still wasn't all gone and they had to keep pouring saline solution over it until it was clear."

The mum-of-two was shocked to learn the cause of the rash and is now warning others to beware when using washing pods.

She said: "When I smelled the jumper it obviously smelled like washing, but it was a very strong chemical smell, way stronger than you usually get.

"I'm aware these things can be dangerous if a child puts it in its mouth, or in its eyes, but you don't expect this.

"I don't know anyone who turns their washing inside out to check the seams after it comes out of the machine."

Sam was released from hospital in the early hours of the following morning with his injury heavily dressed.

He is due to return to hospital on Friday where doctors will assess the full extent of the damage and decide if further treatment is required.

Cheyenne, who is also mum to Kiera, five, said: "We're just hoping that we get good news on Friday and he won't be permanently scarred, fingers crossed."

A spokesman for Fairy Non-Bio manufacturers Procter and Gamble said: "First of all, I am very sorry to hear about this incident and wish the child a speedy recovery.  Nothing is more important to us than the safety of people who use our products.

"Laundry liquid capsules are used safely in millions of homes every day. Our product is safe for the intended use and foreseeable uses.

"Consumers, particularly the elderly and disabled, find great benefit in this product form to make their lives easier (less mess, ease and accuracy of dosing, simpler way of doing laundry).

"Without understanding further the conditions such as how the pod was placed in the drum, it is hard to know what might have been a factor in this incident. This is why we would be very grateful to speak to Ms Manson.

"Unintended children exposures are of great concern to P&G.

"We have taken significant steps to prevent accidents hand in hand with the European Industry Detergents Association (AISE) and its members, helping to create industry wide safety programs with ROSPA, introducing opaque packaging with child-impeding closure system and implementing a multi-million’ dollar education program to help parents understand the importance of safe use and storage."
