A two-year-old boy is in a critical condition after being struck by a car in Liverpool city centre.
Today Merseyside Police launched a plea for witnesses after confirming the toddler was in a "critical but stable" condition in hospital after the sickening scenes in Duke Street which sparked a a huge emergency service presence last night.
Several police cars and an ambulance rushed to the scene at around 7.30pm and the street was cordoned off after the child was hit by a Volkswagen Golf.
The driver stopped at the scene.
Today police gave an update confirming the seriously injured child is a two-year-old boy and his distraught family are receiving specialist support.
A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: "We are continuing to appeal for witnesses following a serious road traffic collision in Liverpool City Centre last night, Wednesday 9 June.
"At around 7.30pm, a report was received to the ambulance service of a collision on Duke Street involving a VW Golf and a two-year-old boy. Officers were alerted a short time later.
"The child was taken to hospital and is currently in a critical but stable condition. The driver stopped at the scene to assist with enquiries. Extensive CCTV, witness and forensic enquiries are ongoing."
Witnesses are being urged to come forward.
Matrix Roads Policing Inspector Carl McNulty said: “The boy’s family are being supported by officers in what is obviously an upsetting time.
"We’re keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident and has yet to come forward.”
